Cameroon travel guide (Africa)

The Republic of Cameroon is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, bordering on Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Chad, Nigeria and with the Central African Republic. The Portuguese designated the river that runs through the country “Rio de Cameros”, meaning river of the crabs.
Geography: the landscape is comprised mainly of flat plateaus rising in the north to form the Adamawa plateau and falling slowly towards Lake Chad. The west of the republic is determined by mountains of volcanic origin, dominated by the active Mount Cameroon near the coast. The southern plateaus are covered by dense rainforest and fall to form wide coastal flatlands.
Mountains and rivers: the highest mountain in the country is Mount Cameroon, also called Fako, with an altitude of 4,070m (13,353 ft). The longest river in Cameroon is the Sanaga, having a length of 920 km (570 miles). The largest lake is Lake Chad, which Cameroon shares with the bordering countries. As the water level can vary greatly due to the dry seasons, the area of the lake fluctuates from 10,000 to 25,000 km².
Climate and best time to visit: Cameroon’s climate is tropical throughout the year with regional differences. The northern part of the country is comprised of seasonally flooded savannahs with little rain falling during the rainy season from July to September and droughts occurring about every two years. In the central part of the country, the highlands, temperatures are milder and there is a relatively high amount of rainfall: the plains south of Mount Cameroon are one of the wettest regions in the world. The coastal plains in the south are determined by a tropical equatorial climate with plenty of precipitation.
Language and communication: the official languages are French and English. National languages are Bantu, Semibantu along with regional African languages.
Health and vaccinations: vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. According to the WHO, Cameroon is a designated yellow fever area. All travellers, with the exception of transit passengers, are required to show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate on arrival. Long clothing should be worn to provide protection against mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. The incidence of malaria in Cameroon is high and prevalent throughout the year. Please seek advice from your GP on effective anti malaria medication and consult a medical practitioner immediately if a fever or flu like illness occurs within one year of visiting Cameroon. Regular outbreaks of Cholera also occur in Cameroon and travellers should take precautions with personal hygiene and sources of food and drink. Medical care is only of a sufficient standard in the larger cities. Visitors are advised to take out comprehensive medical and travel insurance that covers repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled before being eaten.
Entry requirements: British citizens and passport holders require a visa to enter Cameroon and passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. For visas and information on travel in Cameroon, please contact the High Commission for the Republic of Cameroon. Some countries require documentary evidence of parental responsibility before allowing lone parents to enter the country. For further information on exact requirements at immigration please also contact the Cameroon Embassy.
Arrival: only Air France (AF) currently provides a direct flight from Paris (CDG). The Libyan airline Afriqiyah Airways (8U) also provides a convenient service, involving a stop over in Tripoli.
Capital city: Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon has about 1.3 million inhabitants and is the second largest city in the country. It lies at 730 m (2,395 ft) above sea level and was originally built on seven hills. The climate in the city is pleasantly fresh due to the high altitude. Yaoundé is the administrative centre of the country. The impressive nightingale waterfalls on the Sanga River and the dense forest region, home to wild gorillas, in the region should not be missed.
Places of interest: Douala is the largest city in the country and has 1.5 million inhabitants. It is located 24 km from the coast. The city is the cultural and economic centre of the country and is towered over by Mount Cameroon, West Africa’s highest mountain. The cathedral and the museum as well as the Wouri Bridge are all of interest in the city. A visit to the harbour town of Kribi is also highly recommended and provides an ideal starting point for an excursion to the pygmy villages of the Bakus and Londji Beach, one of Cameroon’s best beaches.
The Waza National Park was declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1968. In Waza elephants, monkeys, antelopes, giraffes and lions along with 400 different species of birds may all be watched in their natural habitat.
Religion: about 45% of the population of Cameroon are Christians, 20% are followers of the natural religions.
Major Cities and accommodation: Yaounde, Douala, Garoua, Bamenda, Maroua, Bafoussam, Kousseri, Ngaoundere, Kumba, Loum and Nkongsamba.
