The Republic of the Maldives is an island state in the Indian Ocean and mainly consists of 19 atolls with about 2000 islands in total, 220 of which are inhabited by natives and 87 others that have been opened to tourism. Due to the remote location, the Maldives do not share borders with any other countries.
Mountains and rivers: the highest point is at only 2.4 metres above sea level and is on the island of Wilingili belonging to the Addu Atoll. There are no rivers or lakes as no island is higher than 2m above sea level. The population’s drinking water is won from seawater in desalination plants.
Climate and best time to travel: the climate on the Maldives is tropical and constantly warm to hot throughout the year with only few fluctuations in temperature. Even at night the thermometer rarely falls below 25 Grad and the water temperature is at a constant and pleasant 28° C. The southwest monsoon between April and November is formative. The Maldives is a year round holiday destination, but during the monsoon with its strong wind, it can nevertheless be very unpleasant so that a visit between the months of November and April is more recommended.
National language and communication: the official and national language is Maldivian, a special form of Singhalese that is also understood in Sri Lanka. In the tourist resorts as well as in Malé, English, German, Italian and French are also understood.
Health and vaccinations: vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. Visitors coming from a yellow fever region should be in possession of an international yellow fever vaccination certificate. Long clothing should be worn to provide protection against mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. The Maldives is malaria free. Medical care is very good in all tourist resorts. Visitors are advised to take out comprehensive medical and travel insurance that covers repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled before being eaten.
Entry requirements: British tourists can obtain a tourist visa valid for up to 30 days on arrival in the Maldives only if they hold a valid passport, and possess a valid ticket leaving the Maldives and have sufficient funds for the entire stay. Overstaying the 30 days without an extension is an offence. Please contact the Maldivian High Commission for full information on entry requirements.
Arrival and onward journey: the Maldives is served by many airlines that operate worldwide. Qatar airways (QR) for example fly from London to Male International (MLE).
Capital city: Malé, on the southmale-Atoll, has about 100,000 inhabitants and has been the capital of the Maldives for about 800 years. In the last decades the island was enlarged in order to house the growing population. About 26 % of the entire population of the Maldives live on this totally overrun main island. The most noticeable characteristic of the city is that the houses are not higher than the 40 metre high minaret of the main mosque. With its golden dome, the mosque is also the main attraction of the city.
