Capital city.
The capital San Juan is on the north coast and consists of an old town and a new town. The old town, founded in 1521, has meanwhile been restored in the original Spanish colonial style and is now a listed monument. The old town wall, erected by the Spanish in 1630, is worth a visit. The wall follows the contours of the island and provides the visitor with wonderful views of San Juan and the Caribbean Sea. The Iglesia de San José, the second oldest church in America, the Botanical Gardens and the Ethnological Museum should definitely not be missed. A boat trip in the harbour gives a good overall impression and beautiful views of the city.  Tourists should also visit the Bacardi Rum Distillery west of the old town on the banks of the San Juan Bay near Cataño. Tours are free and a visit to the bottle filling halls gives visitors an insight into production methods of this drink.

Places of interest and beaches:
on the south coast is the wonderful town of Ponce, which is linked to the capital via a tolled motorway. More than half a million dollars was invested into restoring the grand colonial buildings in the old historic centre of town. There are also plenty of beautiful beaches as well as the Indian Ceremonial Park with the 800-year-old cult site of the Taino-Indios. The northeast region is also very beautiful with white sandy beaches, emerald green water and coconut palms swinging in the gentle breeze. The American administration declared it a national park. An attraction on the south coast is the glowing sea in Phosphorescent Bay near La Parguera. The many microscopic small ocean creatures that are disturbed by the movements of fish or boats stage a spectacular lightshow that is particularly attractive on moonless, wind still nights.

Religion
: more than 85% of the inhabitants of Puerto Rico are followers of the Catholic Church; there are also minorities of the Protestant and Jewish faiths.

Major Cities and accommodation:
San Juan, Bayamon, Carolina, Ponce, Caguas, Guaynaibo and Mayaguez.
