The Republic of Serbia borders on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro. The autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and the Kosovo are also part of Serbia.
The north of the country is in the Pannonian plain whereas the central part of the country is determined by several mid mountain ranges and forms a link between the Dinarian mountains and the Balkan mountains. There are several mountains in Serbia with an altitude of over 2000 metres such as the Đeravica (2,656 m; 8,713 ft), the Crni Vrh (2,585 m; 8,480 ft), the Gusam (2,539 m¸ 8,330 ft), the Bogdaš (2,533 m; 8,310 ft) and the Žuti Kamen (2,522 m; 8,274 ft).
Most of Serbia is in the Danube area; important tributaries include the Sava, Morava, the Tisa and Timok. The white Drin and the Pčinja also partly flow through Serbia.
The river island of Ostrvo in the Danube is the largest island in Serbia. It is located east of Belgrade by Kostolac. There are also several larger lakes in Serbia such as the Djerdap lake (serb. Đerdapsko Jezero), Lake Vlasina (serb. Vlasinsko Jezero), lake Perućac (serb. Perućačko Jezero) and lake Grazivode (serb. Gazivode Jezero). The Jelovarnik in Kopaonik, with its 71 m, is the biggest waterfall in Serbia and the longest ravine in Europe is the Iron Gate on the Danube.
There are several national and natural parks in Serbia, in total taking up an area of 7,315.08 km². The country also boasts geomorphological phenomena such as the city of Đavolja Varoš (devils city) with earth pyramids, meanders and the gorge of the river Uvac (serb.: Meandri i klisura reke Uvac) and the river Temska as well as the cliffs of the summit of the Babin Zub, the cliffs of Stol and the Ušać cave (Ušaćka Pećina). A few of the buildings in the country were added to the UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites, these include the Studenica, Dečani and Gračanica monasteries. Serbian is, determined by its location on the Balkan island, an important transport link, as all the important traffic routes from southeast Europe meet up here. There are three international airports in the country, in Belgrade (Aerodrome Nikola Tesla Beograd), Priština and in Niš.
The climate in Serbia is determined in the north by a continental climate, in the south there is a temperate continental climate, and the higher mountains have a mountain climate. The summers in Serbia are warm and the winters are usually short but cold with abundant snowfall.
Belgrade (Serbian Beograd/Београд), the capital of Serbia, is the second largest city on the Danube after Budapest. The city is located at the meeting point of the Sava and Danube rivers in the Pannonian plain. Belgrade is the seat of the Serb-orthodox patriarch and of a Roman Catholic archbishop, but there are also several universities, other institutes of higher education, theatres, museums and cultural establishments. The city gives the impression of spreading out over several hills; these include Banovo Brdo, Lekino Brdo, Topčidersko Brdo, Kanarevo Brdo, Julino Brdo, Petlovo Brdo, Zvezdara, Vračar and the Dedinje. The osmanian castle Kalemegdan is the historical “trademark” of the city. Other cultural and places of interest are the Konak (Residence) of the countess Ljubica, the cathedral of Hl. Sava, the Archangel Michael Cathedral, the national museum, the Nikola-Tesla-Museum, Republic Square, the white palace and Dedinje palace, Topčider park and the old bohemian quarter Skadarlija.
Other interesting cities in Serbia are Inđija, Kragujevac, Nis, Novi Pazar, Novi Sad, Priština and Subotica.
Places of interest other than in Belgrade include the skyscraper city Kragujevac, the spa town Vrnjacka Banja, Djerdap and Fruska Gora National parks and the ski areas of Zlatibor and Kopaonik.
